As part of our Art History Course, we visited the exhibition by illustrator Jean Jullien in Brussels on 27 October 2023.

Favourite artworks

I love this work because it reflects the freedom and beauty of nature. Looking at it makes you want to travel, to fly with the birds. The colour gradations on the canvas are soothing and relaxing. The colours make you want to dream, to enjoy the moment. To enjoy what nature offers us every day, to get drunk. You want to look at it, it’s pleasing to the eye.

Works less appreciated

I don’t like this work as much because I don’t see myself in it, I don’t see a message in it. In my opinion, this work has no soul compared to all the others on display. We can’t understand why this fish is here! What does he want us to share, what emotion does he want us to feel when we look at this work? When I saw it, I didn’t feel anything. For me, it was just a fish, lost in the middle of an ocean of works.
