I visited the Mirò exhibition at the BAM in Mons and it was very interesting. From the beginning there was an entire wall which traced his whole artistic history. There you could observe some items that had belonged to him like his sketch book.

After that was exposed some of his first paintings. At this point of his artistic career, Mirò painted landscapes with plants and the canvas were full of colours. Afterwards we could observe some artworks that were more abstract but still colorful.

There were posters on the wall to describe each period of his career,

notably about his representation of the human figure and also

his conviction to « destroy the paint » expressed in 1927.

Following his idea of murder the painting, his canvases became even more abstract and made on different supports such as cardboard, paper or newsprint. He even painted on a cow skin.

Therefore these last artworks are difficult to understand, the shapes, the splashes, the lines in the form of letters make his paintings confusing and this is in my opinion what makes Mirò’s style. It’s interesting to see that he is not afraid of anything, he even burned some of his paintings or cut them.

At the end of the exhibition are also exhibited statues and pottery made by the artist. It struck me because Mirò built these statuettes with recycled objects, which is a good initiative for ecology and the environment.
